THANK YOU, POPE FRANCIS!

No, I didn't make it to Philadelphia.

Too far north and no one there would have let me into anything "papal."

But I didn't wander far from the TV.

Listening to Pope Francis was wonderful.

Watching him - even better. At the altar? Sure. Among the people - the best. Here, in prison:
Especially on the streets of the city. Here's Father D's favorite moment: just watch Francesco's face - like everyone's beloved Grandpa!

He told the security guard to tell the parents, "You have a great sense of humor!"

So does Papa Francesco!

So, thank you, Francesco, Padre Jorge. Vaya con Dios!

  1. Thx, Fr. D. I too watched wall-to-wall and suffered from Weigel's, EWTN's and CNN's commentary (it's amazing how bias filters and distorts actual papal statements).

It's also hammered home during every public event how much this Church is a MALE church. Acres and acres of men, every liturgical procession and event composed of no one but men, every authority figure a man, and women only referenced as religious sisters or mothers. Thank God for the presence of talented and capable female cantors and choir members, or the only women we'd have seen would have been those in the crowd and the sleek, ritzy wives of prominent donors.

There's no way to convey how repellent this is except to ask MEN to imagine the tables were turned -- if every decision was made by only ordained women, if women were all who were seen hovering around a female pope, and (except rarely) if women's voices were all that were heard.

All that whining aside, Francis touched my heart and soul profoundly.

  2. I have come to the conclusion the Francis is a nice but incredibly clueless old man. I really am not expecting much from him in terms of newness or reform after this. He is essentially JPII with some Latin American spice.

    1. I don't think that anyone gets to be Pope and is "clueless".
He has a Latin style of being around people, a Latin style of interacting that is never blunt or in your face. Some of the most gracious people that I know are from Latin and South America. For the most part, they are always considerate of other people's feelings.
I do not know Pope Francis but he seems to be this way.

    2. I think Francis is one of the most politically savvy people on the planet. He knows the score as well as what is going on behind the scenes. He also appears to me to be one of those rare instances of an enlightened soul that only some along every few centuries. I mean, how else do you explain a 78 year old man able to keep up with that non-stop itinerary for 9 days, with all those cameras always in his face, and NEVER once looking annoyed?

  3. I don't think he is clueless, but I think some of his tactics may backfire. He talks a very open line, but then pulls back and insists that nothing substantial will change in the Church. He leads women in the Church on, but with no substantial change in the power structure nothing will change. The images of hundreds of men seen in his addresses to bishops and seminarians and the almost totally male processions in his liturgies belie what he really stands for.
One of the more striking inconsistencies I saw was the proclamation that the sexual abuse crisis handling by some bishops was 'very ugly'. Yet, who was right in the middle of the group of bishops that he addressed earlier? +John Nienstadt. If he truly meant what he said, he would see that +John was banned from the festivities. Once again preaching one thing and practicing exactly the opposite.
He preaches tolerance of homosexuals, but falls back into the standard hard Church line.
Don't get me wrong, I like the man. But if he continues to preach and act out of both sides of his mouth, he will lose much of the support he has amassed.

  4. Francis is Great! 100% improvement on the misery of the Ratzinger years.

    1. Really? Given his "secret" meeting with Kim Davis and with it his apparent endorsement of the far right's we hate gays and women agenda, I would prefer the Ratzinger years back. With him, what you see is what you get. There is no nice-nice mercy icing over an ugly, fire breathing culture warrior inside. I feel so duped by the act now.

    2. Oh for Christ's sake, he gave Rosaries to someone being pissed on by the USA's ever-aggrieved, always-persecuted, totally-pissed off gays, who make themselves obnoxious by their prissy preening. He's also met with a poor transgendered person and others hated by one side or the other. Privately and peacefully to give everyone some compassion. If you miss Queen Benedict, just wait a while? Can you imagine the SOB the aggrieved right wing Cardinals will push out on the balcony next? If all you bitching and moaning fuckwits would just STFU! Have a great day!

    3. Yeah.. endorsing the far right's nullification of the Supreme Court is an act of love and compassion. All Kim Davis had to do was resign or delegate someone to sign the licenses.

kim davis hates herself? false consciousness, i guess.

    5. I'm liking him less and less. It seems as if it is the same old duplicitous conduct that we have seen from our bishops over the past quarter century. Putting on a nice face in public while in private doing the exact opposite. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, though. Some of the crazy right wing bishops and handlers probably set this up. I'm sure Frances doesn't know Kim from Adam(or Steve). But the term hypocrisy does come to mind.

    1. 6:13 is quite obviously very upset.
The lines come from the script of the day from the Spittle Flecked Nutty Focus group of Madison and Lake Como.
Lacy Boy and his Invert pal Muddy Munday need to provide the handouts to their Trolls, they being challenged in the upstairs department.

  6. 613, how is it that Kim Davis is being pissed on by gays? Gays have been brutalized by the religious from time immemorial. Gays have finally won basic rights... Quit whining religious right wing.

Quit prissing and preening, obnoxious self-centered, star-studded gay princesses! For Christ's sake, shut up and plan your next vacation cruise on the Gay Ship or your next float parade in Provincetown. Grow up and shut up.

    1. Why, Lacy Boy, who would have thought that you cared so much?

    2. 903, You say: "Quit prissing and preening, obnoxious self-centered, star-studded gay princesses!"

I'm very sorry that you feel this way, but too bad. If you want to contemplate preening princesses just do a search right here on this blog about Cardinal Burke.

Why are you so ill tempered and nasty, are you angry because you believe all the sexual repression that your Catholic Church has forced on you under the guise of controlling you?
