IMPORTANT THEOLOGICAL ISSUE RISKS SPLITTING CHURCH IN TWO

To read and listen to some people, one might think that the Church is on the verge of schism over the issue of washing feet on one day of the entire liturgical year. And the DISCUSSION (rant? tirade? obsession?) lasts longer than the Lenten Season!

File under things that make you go hmmmmmmm.

I don't know about you, but I am extremely tired of reading, hearing and talking about it.

  1. Readerette here. As a formerly Catholic person I have never understood why the footwashing ritual isn't a sacrament.

Outward sign? Check. Can't really say that about going into a little box to tell your dirty secrets, by the way, can you?

Instituted by Christ? Check. Can't really say that about marriage, which had been institutionalizing its victims for millenia before Jesus showed up.

Confers grace? Well, confers clean feet anyway. I say lots of things confer grace and they don't have to be instituted by a god to do it.

So how about it? Why not have a foot fetish sacrament?

  2. I think they'd ought to get rid of it. When my kids acted like that over something, I took it away from them and made them go sit in the corner until they could act like human beings.
